"Time Traders" fell under the recommendation list for me as a free Kindle. At first, I wasn't really all that into typical science fiction stories of the 50s, though I do enjoyed some of them. The cover itself wasn't as interesting as the title itself. Admittedly, I am a fan of all things time-travel. So, I put aside a time to read this with no expectations. This Kindle version actually have two books in one: "The Time Traders" and "Galactic Derelict." The former is the first in the series quite appropriately entitled "The Time Traders" with the latter being the second novel. The first focuses on a confrontation between the US and the "Reds" as well as the mysterious alien race that has used time travel (this novel route back and forth between present day and a trading tribal society in ancient Britain). The main character is Ross Murdock, who always in trouble with the laws, but he was chosen for his physical make-up and quickly recruited into the army of time. Through him, we discover a conflict between the Russians and the Americans in the past and by an accident, an alien race who aren't happy to see one of their own neglected crashed ships on Earth being looted. The second novel directs our attention to a new character, Travis Fox, an American Indian, as he eventually stumbled upon the army of time and became recruited as well. Both Fox and the characters of the previous story taken upon a secret mission to recover a crashed ship in the past and eventually, in an emergency, Fox, Ross, Ashe, with technician Renfry, all taken shelter inside an intact ship and became trapped when the ship takes off on an automatic course. During their journey, they'd experience three worlds, no longer alive with an advanced alien civilization, and work their way back home.
Needless to say, I actually found myself enjoying this series and will attempt to read more by this author. As I was getting into the stories, I can see that they are pure adventure, action-packed, quite suitable for young adult audience. Which, all made me wish that I would read this series when I was a kid - I would really enjoy them, then and now.

The Time Traders Andre Norton 9781374974302 Books Reviews
Andre Norton is the undisputed Grand Dame of science fiction. With a breadth of voices that seem to change between novels, but that always fit the mood of the story, she tops my "must read list." Enter the Time Traders series, also called the Ross Murdock series for the main character, seven novels. The first five books of the series are among her best and I've re-read them many ties over the years. Glad to see some of them are finally available for .
#1 Time Traders - Opens with the trial of Ross Murdock. Before sentencing, which the judge explains will be harsh, he is offered an opportunity to "volunteer" for an secret government project. Ross Murdock is given the choice of facing a new medical procedure called Rehabilitation or volunteering to join a secret government project. As part of Operation Retrograde, Murdock and his new partner archaeologist Gordon Ashe are to discover where the Reds are finding advanced technology in the past. After their outpost is bombed, Ashe and Gordon are captured by the Reds starting a breakneck adventure. Getting separated during their escape, the story follows Murdock as he solves the mystery only to find an even bigger threat, the Reds are looting an alien spaceship - and the owners don't like that fact!
The remaining books in the series are
#2 Galactic Derelict - (not available for kindle - yet) Ashe and Murdock take an unexpected trip to one of the alien's worlds, Joined by a new character Travis Fox.
#3 The Defiant Agents - (available) Travis Fox, and others, are given the memories of their Apache Ancestors (in an attempt to give them an advantage and speed up the process) and sent to settle the planet Topaz. The Reds had the same idea so it's Apaches vs Mongols.
#4 Key Out of Time - (available) Ashe, Murdock and a Polynesian lady, who has a pair of intelligent dolphins, are sent to the planet Hawaika to discover what happened to the inhabitants. A storm sends Murdock back in time where three cultures are about to clash.
#5 Firehand - (not available for kindle - yet) Take one band or predatory aliens, send the on a rampage through our history and "who you gonna call?" Ross Murdock is back facing the same aliens that caused his nickname Firehand. (reference to an event in #1 Time Traders.)
#6 Echoes in Time - After a VERY long time without any further stories, Ms Norton collaborates with Sherwood Smith to revive the series. Time agents Ross Murdock and Eveleen Riorden are recalled from their honeymoon to take part in a dangerous assignment find a team of Russian scientists who have vanished without a trace from a research mission in the past of a far-off planet. - I haven't actually read this one. It's new to me but I can't find it on
#7 Atlantis Endgame - with Sherwood Smith again. Evidence of time travel in ancient Atlantis leads Murdock, Ashe, Riordan and the others to investigate. I haven't read this one either.
This book, "Time Traders" by Andre Norton is a compendium of the first two books in her "Time Traders" series "The Time Traders" and "Galactic Derelict." The novels were written in 1958 and 1959, respectively. They read just about as you'd expected decent science fiction to read from that era technically good writing, good story, but a bit linear/simplistic in plotting (and there's nothing wrong with that since that's just the way it was back then). The two books aren't quite evenly matched, though. "The Time Traders" is quite a bit better than "Galactic Derelict" with much more of a plot to it. For "The Time Traders," my only real issue with it is that the pacing could use some work. The last half just keeps going from action point to action point with no rest in between. It gets a bit tiring. On a stand-alone basis, I'd rate that book at 3.5 to 4 stars (out of 5). "Galactic Derelict" is not as good. Most of it consists of our protagonists being dragged along somewhere without anything they can do about it. So, instead of them solving a problem, it's more of a travelogue. The writing also feels more 50s stilted than the previous book. I'd rate this book at 3 stars. So, as an average, I'd say the compendium is an OK 3 stars out of 5.
The books in Andre Norton's "Time Trader" series are
1 and 2 Time Traders The Time Traders & Galactic Derelict
3 The Defiant Agents
4 Key Out of Time
